"SMILE, IT'S FREE THERAPY." -Doug Horton

today my perfect-to-me daughter started physical therapy.
she can speak 20 words that i understand.
she can sign 10 words clearly.
she can say "an ou, mama" (thank you, mama) and melt my heart.
she can find our shoes and put them on her little feet, then take them off.
she can sing songs to her baby dolls and us.
she can give the best hugs and kisses.
she can flash the sweetest smile or the sassiest scowl.
she can scoot across the room at lightening speed.

but she can't pull up on her own.
and she can't walk on her own.
so we were told it might be time to get a little help.
we had her formal evaluation today.
it's now official, she needs some help.
but the therapist thinks with a few months of therapy she will be moving on her own.
and she agreed with our pediatrician, that she doesn't think anything major is wrong.
and i know there are so many worse things that it could be.
and i know to be grateful this is all she needs.
and i am also grateful that God has always provided peace through this.
had you told me a year ago that i would be okay with her not walking yet,
i never would have believed it.
when we realized she would be a late walker i worried that it would bother me
when other kids her age started walking.
it unexpectedly didn't.
then i worried i would feel sad for her when kids younger than her started walking.
it unexpectedly hasn't.
and that is a huge blessing.
as is the wonderful, loving therapist that she was placed with today.
as is the encouragement and support from so many.
as are those blue eyes that look up at me proudly each time she tries
to get stronger and practices her moves.

I've been following your blog (via Kelly's Korner) for a little while, and I thought that I would stop "lurking" and provide a little support on a issue that I know all too well.

My second son, Holden, was born 8 weeks early. He was identified with a significant gross motor delay around his first birthday (last Dec.). We started PT in January, and it has been a God send! In the past four months, he has gone from sitting and rolling for mobility to taking his first steps (we are very close to walking independently!).

It was such a humbling experience to realize that there was an issue with my precious boy (who is completely perfect to us!). It was one of the first times in my life that I had to admit that there was an issue and to ask for help and support. I (a complete control freak) realized that I couldn't do it on my own.

I turned the situation over to God and to the PT to help my boy. With great determination and dedication, I listened to them and worked with Holden (and continue to do so daily). His progress has confirmed that there are no neurological issues, just a developmental delay that needed a little attention. What a blessing!

I will say a little prayer for you and your little one. Prayer for patience, health, and grace.

Sincerly,
Heather

You are such a good Mama Annalee. Isn't it amazing how our hearts can be so full of love for these precious babies? Look at all those amazing things Adelaide can already do! Avelyn isn't speaking yet. She waves hi and bye and smiles like there's no tomorrow but she can't talk and she doesn't know where her nose is or her "gut". I'm not worried either. She is my absolutely perfect, precious baby girl. Can't wait to see Adelaide learning to walk! I know you're worried but I'm glad you have found peace.

Annalee, it has been such a blessing and encouragement to me to watch you as a mom through your blog!! You have set the bar high, my friend. Know that the Lord has wonderful things in store for miss Adelaide as she grows into the woman He desires her to be. She is not going to be defined by this world, but rather, by a God who specializes in weakness and working powerfully through showing His love and perfect design of your precious little girl. Take it from someone who knows developmental delays, she will succeed and she will grow to be a beautiful woman defined by her inner beauty and the grace of her spirit. I will most definitely keep you, Evan, and Adelaide in my prayers. Bless you! Psalm 139

I know it is hard. Thank goodness God gives us the strength. In Psalms 23 it says God will take us through the shadow of death. I wish it said He took us around and not through. But know God will take you through. You are an amazing Mother and Your bundle of Joy is that A bundle of Gods Joy

I'm an ACU grad and every-now-and-then blog stalker. :) We were told our little boy had low muscle tone and started PT at 10 m.o. It has been a road I never knew a thing about, but I now count it a complete blessing.

He is doing great (close to being completely discharged from therapy), and I have an entire new appreciation for the amazing work pediatric therapists do and for the blessing of a healthy child.

The most wonderful part of this journey is when you get to celebrate the accomplishments that others might see as small, but you know the hard work that went into them!

You have such a sweet attitude about this and I just know Adelaide will be up and walking in no time!!! I was reading through the list of ALL the things your sweet girl is able to do and thinking "Oh, no! D isn't doing that yet!" As mommas we get so concerned about our little ones and their development but it all eventually works out.

My little Brooklyn is about to be 14 months and isn't walking yet. She was nearly 11 months when she started crawling, and I think it was 8 months for sitting up. She has an airway/respiratory problem that's put her behind on things.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that we will probley be there too and I wanted to thank you for encouraging me to have a good attitude about it! Truly, I became much more okay with it after she started crawling and pulling up. That was a big relief and I was able to tell myself that she will get there, in her own time!
