A WEEK WELL SPENT...

It's been ten years since I got to marry my best friend.
We've worked, played, studied, grown, agreed, disagreed, laughed, cried, and much more along the way.
On the smooth and rough days alike, there is no one I'd rather live life with than Evan.

I'm always thankful to get to be a team while we juggle day-to-day life and strive to do it the best we can.
But for a few days this summer we got the treat of traveling to beautiful Martha's Vineyard
and simply soaking up lots of valuable, uninterrupted time having fun together for our anniversary.
A couple years before we met, I had spent a month on this island nannying and absolutely loved it. Getting to be back again twelve years later together was unbelievable.
Since returning home I keep looking through our pictures and smiling once again at this dream of a trip.
So in an effort to summarize some of why we loved this trip I present to you-

SOME TEXANS GUIDE TO MV:
(with a LOT of help along the way from people we like whom actually know the area)

THE ISLAND:
Martha's Vineyard is actually made up of several towns across it's 100 square miles-
Aquinnah, West Tisbury, Vineyard Haven, Chilmark, Oak Bluffs, Edgargtown, and Chappaquiddick.
It is part of Massachusetts, and is off the coast from Cape Cod, not too far from Nantucket.
The island is approximately 10 miles wide and 20 miles long and each corner of that has its own personality.

LODGING:
The first half of our trip we stayed in a wonderful cottage in Chappaquiddick,
and the second half we stayed on the other side of the island at the neat Lambert's Cove Inn.

EATS:
There is no shortage of yumminess to be had in Martha's Vineyard.
Over our few days there we ate delicious seafood, drank great coffee, and found plenty of desserts.
Outlined more in the following day by day report below.

DAY ONE:
On Friday we traveled across America in a rainstorm.
We took a car to the airport early that morning, then a flight from Houston to Boston,
rented a car and drove to Woods Hole,  and finally boarded a ferry that took us to Martha's Vineyard!
We shared a delicious dinner that night at the house with some of the family i nannied for.
Evan was introduced to their tradition of saying your "three bests" of the day at dinner,
and we've been doing it at our house with the kids most nights since returning.

DAY TWO:
On Saturday we woke up and took the Chappy ferry across to Edgartown.
We spent the morning sipping coffee from Behind the Bookstore and. We drove up the road a bit and wandered around the West Tisbury Farmer's Market. Next we made our way to Chilmark where we checked out the Chilmark Flea Market, picked up lunch at the Chilmark General Store, and mailed some postcards. From there we drove up to Aquinnah. We ate our sandwiches and saw the colorful cliffs of Gay Head and lighthouse there. We returned to Edgartown for the afternoon and evening. The Fourth of July festivities had all been postponed a day due to the rain, so we got to watch the all-american parade with friends while eating waffle cones from Mad Martha's Ice Cream. That night we sat in the sand under the Edgartown lighthouse, people watched and eventually watched the fireworks along the beach.

 DAY THREE:
We ate breakfast at Lucky Hank's, shopped along main street, then sat outside at Atlantic for the view and to watch the boats over lunch. We drove all over the island, passed more than a few chickens and goats, and then checked into our inn for the rest of the trip. That night my life changed as I ate a butter lobster roll from The Net Result. I haven't stopped talking about it since. Around 7 we met fellow nanny and friend Melissa in Oak Bluffs, and we waited to pick up our friends Michael and Abbe who were arriving from Dallas when then got off the ferry. That night we all strolled through Oak Bluffs together. First we checked out Back Door Donuts- where my cinnamon sugar doughnut was good and the late night hot apple fritter may be the first fruit filled pastry I have ever loved. We saw the oldest carousel in America- The Flying Horses Carousel. Then we walked along the Gingerbread Cottages and took in the intricate details of this neat piece of history.

DAY FOUR:
We filled up with breakfast at our inn then ventured back to Edgartown. We gathered fromage and lunch supplies from Black Sheep to take on our afternoon sailboat ride around Katama Bay. Our expert MV recommendation giver Megan (thank you!), had suggested the Magic Carpet sailboat ride and it was easily one of the most memorable/my favorite parts of the trip.  This wooden sailboat is sailed by such a nice and knowledgable couple. His family has lived on the island for five generations and they casually shared great info. On the way out the water was nice, calm, and picturesque. On the way back the waves and winds picked up and laughed uncontrollably while holding onto the sides and getting more than a little splashed. Once we said our goodbyes to Captains Todd and Leigh, we headed to BTB for afternoon coffee, window shopped, hung out at the Wharf, and then drove out to to Chilmark. We picked up dinner from The Bite and carried it out to Menemsha Beach to watch the sunset. We got there just in time to watch the sun go down over this fishing village. Afterward we went into Vineyard Haven for another round of Mad Martha's.

DAY FIVE:
Our final trip day was wonderfully laid-back from start to finish. It began with breakfast from (worth-the-wait) Art Cliff Diner and a little souvenir shopping in Vineyard Haven. Next we made a grocery store run for drinks and produce, grabbed sandwiches (and cookies) from Black Dog Bakery, and gathered our books and sunscreen from our rooms. Then (thanks to passes and beach chairs from our inn) we set up in the sand for the rest of the day at the beautiful private Lambert's Cove Beach. Late that afternoon we went back to clean up for a leisure, delicious dinner at Atria. Once we were beyond stuffed we ended the day with more good conversation, good tunes, and a late-night drive from one end of the island to the other.

DAY SIX:
We zipped up our suitcases, ate one more breakfast at the inn,
then headed back for the ferry, Boston airport, and eventually Houston,
wrapping up a wonderful vacation.

THE KID SETUP:
While we were loving our days, it was wonderful to know so were all three of the kids
during their special week at Camp Popp-a-Grammy in Abilene.
They got to ride in the neighborhood Fourth of July parade, make s'mores, eat Cajun Cones daily, visit the NICCL, go to the library, see a children's production, watch Muppets movie on the ACU lawn, go swimming, play in the mudpie kitchen, visit a waterpark, go camping, and more.

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass
under the trees on a summer's day,
listening to the murmur of water,
or watching the clouds float across the blue sky,
is by no means waste of time."
