the date has been on the calendar all summer.
we have talked about what it might be like.
your shark backpack has been hanging on a shelf waiting for it.
i nervously woke you up.
i talked up meeting your new teachers.
and making new friends.
i fixed your hair with gel.
we took the tags off your new orange tennis shoes.
you ate a well-rounded breakfast.
there was even a moment to snap a few pictures of you.
i smiled at you standing proudly with your fully-loaded backpack.
and you smiled cooperatively back.
i grabbed your lunchbox and water bottle from the fridge.
we loaded the car without distractions.
it seemed we were even going to arrive on time.
this morning was too good to be true!
we pulled into a parking spot on the front row.
i prayed for your day and all it would hold.
we walked hand in hand through the doors that would lead us to your class.
the lights were off and the room was empty.
it turns out your school really began the following week.
the good news is:
the practice run went really well.
you are a laidback kid.
you didn't even seem phased that your mom totally messed up.
we made the most of an extra day together.
we now know how cute you will look on your real first day of school.
i make a lot of mistakes in life, but they aren't usually due to disorganization.
i am still laughing about this one. and will be for a long, long time.
i hope someday you think it's hilarious too buddy.

Awww, I've done something similar but for the 1st day the pool being open. We'd get alllll ready to go to the pool... And then the pool would be closed. Or worse the swim team was only be allowed in.
And I've done that twice.
Yah me!
Those orange shoes are awesome! I've been looking for orange shoes to replace shep's orange crocs. I love orange. :)
