2) READ one book a month.
i had no idea how out-of-the-reading-habit i had gotten. i am glad to be making an effort to read again because deep down i really enjoy it but i realized i don't make it a priority at all. after the kids go to bed i am perfectly content sitting on the couch next to evan flipping through magazines and catalogs or playing words with friends. of course that's okay sometimes too, but i'm always glad afterward when i pick up a good old fashioned book instead. i just joined a book club so i'm hoping that will help me continue to read a book every month or two even though my resolution to do so is technically done.
this year i READ:

FIREFLY LANE
by Kristin Hannah
In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all- beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer's end they've become TullyandKate. Inseparable.
So begins Kristin Hannah's magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives. For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship- jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they've survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart, and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test.

STORI TELLING
by Tori Spelling
This is Tori's chance to finally tell her side of the tabloid-worthy life she's led, and she talks about it all: her decadent childhood birthday parties, her nose job, her fairy-tale wedding to the wrong man, her so-called feud with her mother. Tori has already revealed her flair for brilliant, self-effacing satire on her TV shows, but her memoir goes deeper, into the real life behind the rumors: her complicated relationship with her parents; her struggles as an actress after90210; her accident-prone love life; and, ultimately, her quest to define herself on her own terms. From her over-the-top first wedding to finding new love to her much-publicized, and misunderstood "disinheritance,"sTORI tellingis a juicy, eye-opening, enthralling look at what it really means to be Tori Spelling.

THE HUNGER GAMES
by Suzanne Collins
by Suzanne Collins
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on life TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before- and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

CATCHING FIRE
by Suzanne Collins
Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol- a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create. Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.

MOCKINGJAY
by Suzanne Collins
Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss's family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans- except Katniss. The sucess of the rebellion hinges on Katniss's willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem. To do this, she must put aside her feelings of anger and distrust. She must become the rebels' Mockingjay- no matter what the personal cost.

RADICAL
by David Platt
In this book, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple- then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus.

THE HELP
by Kathryn Stockett
Twenty-two year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved mail Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken. Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own. Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these woman will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. I've read some neat ones lately- this one might interest you since you have a teaching background, too: Personality Plus for Parents. It takes uses the Meyers-Briggs categories for personality and then has a chapter detailing each personality type of a child plus how a sanguine parent interacts with a sanguine child, a melancholy parent with a sanguine child, etc. Very interesting and it's been helpful with one of our children in particular.
I so need to get back in the habit of reading books. LOVED all your choices!
I just got back in the habit of reading too, and now I can't stop. I read The Hunger Games series and could not put them down. Very unique and I loved them!
Love all of your book choices/suggestions! I had a minor obsession with the Hunger Games series (read them all in a few days) and then (after I had read them all) found out it was "young adult". Truly, I had no idea. Austin still teases me about it. But I really appreciated the lack of cussing :)
once you get back in the habit, it's so easy. i'll definitely be adding stori telling and freedom for mothers to my list. thanks for the suggestions and happy reading!
Well done! You need to get on Goodreads so I can get some other recommendations from you. So are these just the books you read or are these the ones you actually recommend? Radical sounds really intriguing, I'll have to put it in my queue :)
PS So impressive that you read through the entire NT! How many of us have made that pledge and then let it fall by the wayside a few weeks (or days) later. My bday is in a few weeks so I may have to borrow your resolution idea and get that version.
I heart The Hunger Games series! You know they're making a movie? I am reading The Help (also a movie coming out soon) right now and loving it! Great choices!
This is great! So, which ones were your favorites? I'm always looking for new books to add to my must read list.
I am so proud of you for making time to read while you were going through G's first year of life! You inspire me... in fact I just made my 30 before 30 list!
