my FIRST IMPRESSION OF ELMO
in the last 25 years, the sesame street neighborhood must have enlarged its population. some of the old familiar faces are still residing where they belong, but new friends have moved in. friends such as abby cadabby, zoe, rosita, and of course elmo. the character of elmo has actually been around since before i was even born, but until 1985 he was simply known as "baby monster" and obviously didn't have the same fame he does today.i had long forgotten my preschool passion for sesame street. we had never watched the show with adelaide. i prided myself that not a single item of character merchandise could be found inside the walls of our house. or so i thought, until the day my daughter delightfully pointed to her diaper and said, "MEL-MO!" from that day forward, she has spotted elmo everywhere. there is something positively addictive about that red body and those giant eyes. as soon as adelaide's aunt mel heard about her love for elmo, she surprised her niece with a giant stuffed elmo. adelaide loved him immediately but could barely lift him on her own so he spent much of his time sitting nearby watching her.
just a few short weeks later, we went to visit witt at the hospital. while we were eating lunch in the waiting room mel took adelaide for a little walk, just the two of them. when they returned it was evident they had stopped by the gift shop and adelaide had received another sesame street friend, or rather two. mel told me she took her to get a smaller elmo, but adelaide fell in love with abby that day too, and mel thought they made a nice pair. adelaide proudly carried one of her pint-sized friends in each hand as we said good-bye to the family and went to physical therapy. that day at therapy she would hesitantly take steps, all the while never loosening her grip on abby and elmo. later that night was when adelaide took her first steps. and of course, elmo and abby were nearby cheering.just as the neighborhood of sesame street's population has grown over the years, our family's population of stuffed puppets has grown too. what started out with elmo and abby has now expanded to quite the collection. thanks to adelaide's grandparents, aunts, and uncles she is now the proud owner of so many of her "friends." adelaide has even inherited an additional elmo from her loyal cousin carson, who couldn't bear to keep an elmo of her own. each time she saw it she insisted it belonged to adelaide, so now it does.

adelaide takes them for walks, she carries them in her backpack, she watches her shows with them, she pats their backs and puts them down for naps, she calls each one by name and tells them they are "good girls." her days are quite busy caring for so many little friends, and she loves it that way.
as for you elmo,i must admit my first impression of you wasn't great. honestly i found you rather annoying. i despised how you talk in third-person. i really could not fathom how you have such a following,
or why there are so many that are eager to be a part of your world. and don't even get me started about all the paraphernalia with your face slapped on it.
but while i still can't bear to dress my daughter in a shirt, or shoes, or mask, or dress displaying you, i have come a long way in my love for you. i now see you for what you truly are, a lovable monster that others can't help but fall in love with. and as for all those friends of yours, they are pretty great too. we've decided to keep you around for quite awhile (as if we even have a choice).

I remember when Tickle Me Elmo came out, my now 15 yr old son was about 3 I think.. maybe 4.. gosh it seems like a lifetime ago sometimes!! But he clung to him like crazy... She is so precious.. I LOVE her hair! and little chubby cheeks...
All I have to see is I am so proud of you for accepting your fate with "baby monster". OH the sacrifices mama's make! :)
I love Sesame Street and so does Hannah she is mesmerized by any show dominantly puppets! But I still am not a fan of Elmo talking in third person, or Baby Bears ridiculous lisp.
I love your precious pictures of Adelaide she is one of the cutest toddlers ever! I can't wait to see baby #2!
I'm going to find the tackiest elmo outfit possible and give to Adelaide for her birthday. :) Just kidding! She is very cute with all her little friends!
I'll be the first to say that it's only my "Momma Love" that let my girl wear an Elmo dress last week to Sesame Street Live...Not that she's old enough to "want" to, but I did give in and let her dress the part....we'd found the cutest boutique-looking Elmo dresses on Etsy and the seller never would contact me back. So, I decided I'd try to make the girls (Annabelle & my best friends little girl) mathcing ones. I made an elmo out of felt for the top and then made the little dresses... They turned out cute, and EVERYONE at the show was decked out in their Elmo or Zoe attire, so I was glad we had something on, too! Ha...
Adelaide is SOOOOO cute carrying around all of her "friends" and honestly, those mini stuffed monsters are adorable! Love it...
I tell Alex that if he ever takes A to the store and brings her back in character shoes that light up and blink, he's in SO MUCH TROUBLE! He says I'm terrible because of this. I feel better about myself after reading this post - because I'm not alone! HA!
Love all of the pics of Adelaide smiling from ear to ear! She is so gorgeous. If anyone could pull off an elmo outfit, this girl could! :)
((HUGS))
awww...merit is in love with him, too, and she also calls him, "melmo!" she can spot him from miles away. and yes, i also cannot bear to let her actually wear his face in any form!
How funny that so many kids call him Melmo!! Both mine did too!! Also, I just have to say that "the monster at the end of this book" was a childhood favorite of mine and now Brady LOVES that book!! :)
Elmo is very popular amongst the preschool population! I took Dillan to Sesame Street Live a couple of weeks ago and he LOVED Elmo without ever really watchiing him on TV...it's crazy how they are so drawn to a furry, red monster.
I feel the same way about characters and their various items for sale at the stores, yet somehow Thomas has found his way into our house (*cough* husband! *cough*). At least Sesame Street is educational with a good message! :)
I must say we heart melmo, too. I wasn't thrilled about good old Sesame Street but caved when it became the only show Avery will actually watch, at least it's not Barney. Stick to your guns on the no Elmo clothes, I will be doing my best, too.
This describes our house perfectly, except replace Elmo with Dora! My 3 year old is obsessed!! Also, we DO NOT do character clothes! EVER!! That is where I draw the line!! I am so glad that I am not alone!! :)
What a little cutie! We have those same Elmo toys (for Ella of course). Also, I made those cinnamon rollups of yours, and they were a big hit with our friends!
I really love reading all of your first impressions!
I love your blog so much, I nominated you for an award! Check my blog to see your shout out!
I am that same way about buying "character things". But it brings Lynlee so much joy, how could I not! I've managed to keep the clothing only on the pjs!
i am with you on not buying stuff with characters! now if only my family would obey me... haha!
I'm finally catching up on everything - how funny that you wrote about Elmo too! I was a huge Sesame Street fan when I was little and had no idea how long Elmo has been around. And I'm with you - I caved and bought her an Elmo book and a bowl on the $1 spot at Target but I refuse to buy her clothes with that face on it... except if they ever get those pajamas in stock in her size I saw at the store. Oh she wanted those SO BAD and it was SO CUTE!
