on january 8th, 2008, evan and i had eagerly packed our bags and arrived at the austin medical center to check in just as my doctor had told us to do. he had scheduled my induction for the following day and said he wanted us at the hospital no later than 8pm the night before so we could spend the night and i could be monitored before delivery. we arrived on time and walked in with all of our stuff to be told there was no record of me on the schedule. we were actually asked to wait in the waiting room. we were told there was no room in the inn, but only temporarily. my doctor called the hospital from home to straighten things out, and wouldn't you know a room suddenly became available.evan and i have laughed many times about that situation and wondered how our baby's delivery was somehow not on the schedule that night. oh the nerve of that receptionist to tell one giant prego girl and her husband that they weren't scheduled to come in and have their firstborn. and to send is to go sit in the waiting room! it was as if she thought i might have just gotten the day wrong. i mean seriously, how could such a situation really have happened? well, tonight, one short year later, i found out.
tonight at about 10pm, i was sitting here in houston thinking how this was the last night i put a "baby" adelaide to bed. tomorrow night i will put a 1-year-old to bed! the memories in the corner of my mind, were interrupted when the phone rang. i answered and it was austin medical center on the other end of the line. my first thought was, "maybe they are calling to congratulate me on the 1 year anniversary of my daughter's birth eve. how very nice." instead i was hastily asked, "are you coming in? is there a reason you have not yet arrived for your appointment?"
evidently my hospital appointment was scheduled all along, just for january 8, 2009. thank goodness they went ahead and squeezed me in last january. i'm oh-so thankful i did not have to live like an elephant and be pregnant for two years. thankfully we got to meet adelaide in 2008. as i realized the mix up i began laughing uncontrollably on the phone. the poor lady that called had to wait for me to catch my breath before i could assure her that i was most certainly not pregnant, and no i will not be coming in to deliver my baby, i actually already did that thanks. as a matter of fact she's already sleeping soundly in the next room and has been for almost exactly a year."

Oh my! That's hilarious!
I hopped on your blog in hopes of being the first to wish sweet Adelaide "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Imagine my surprise when I learned that according the hospital, this truly IS her "birth day." You really might want to check her permanent record...this could be confusing for years to come :) But, I distinctly remember being in that waiting room for hours...I'll never forget the proud smile on Evan's face as he announced "it's a girl!" and the memory of seeing your "mini-me" for the very first time is seared on my heart forever!!! Happy First, dear Adelaide!
Your story is priceless! It is so hard to believe that she is a one year old. Happy Birthday Adelaide!
