DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW we have been in boston?
for evan's graduation present our family pitched in together for the two of us to go on a celebratory trip. we went to boston for 3 days of history and fun! so here's a bit of boston trivia for you...

DID YOU KNOW boston was home to the first subway station in america?

it was reported that when this station first opened people were amazed that the buildings above ground stayed standing even after the movement of the train underneath them. we enjoyed catching the "t" from this station during our trip.

DID YOU KNOW cantina italiana in the north end has been opened since 1931?

our first night in town we ate at catina italiana. we love italian food and have tried our fair share of it, but the goodness of these dishes blew us away. we thoroughly enjoyed the homemade pasta at the oldest restaurant in the north end.

DID YOU KNOW boston cream pie (the official state dessert) originated at the parker house hotel?

we stayed at the omni parker house hotel so trying the original boston cream pie there was a necessity. the hotel is also known for being the longest continuously operating hotel in the united states.

DID YOU KNOW outside of this building in 1770 was the boston massacre and from its balcony in 1776 was where the people first heard the decleration of independence read?

monday morning we visited this building, the old state house, and learned all about its history. it was just 1 of the stops we made along the freedom trail. the city of boston has created a walking tour you can give yourself by simply following the red line (some parts are red paint on the sidewalk and at some parts the red line is made up of bricks) that will lead you to 16 historic sites in the city.

DID YOU KNOW the boston duck tour transports were originally designed for use in WWII?

after our walking tour, we climbed aboard for another tour. the infamous duck tour was highly entertaining and educational. we spent almost 2 hours traveling by land and sea to view boston's rich historic sites. (that's our truck/boat in the window reflection)

DID YOU KNOW boston named a street in honor of our dog?

well maybe it has been around a little longer than berkeley has, but anyway we looked at it we liked this street. it is conveniently located near newbury street and shopping galore . we made sure to take our time remembering our favorite berk back home and enjoy the area.

DID YOU KNOW fenway park now holds the record for most consecutive sellout games?
monday night we had tickets to watch the red sox vs. the rays. during the game we found out we were a part of history in the making. we attended the red sox's 456th consecutive sellout game. that game broke the record for most sellouts in a row. every game in fenway since 2003 has been sold out. now i'm still a yankees fan and all, but you have to admit that's really impressive!

DID YOU KNOW the oldest presidential birthplaces are still standing on their original foundations right outside of boston?
tuesday morning we went to quincy, ma to tour 3 of the adams' family homes. it was incredible to step foot in the places our 2nd and 6th presidents lived their lives and made significant contributions to our country.

DID YOU KNOW the adams impacted our nation from the american revolution to the civil war and beyond?
while evan has read the john adams biography, watched every part of the mini series, and has extensive knowledge about this family i was more or less along for the ride. however by the end of our tour i was equally amazed as ev at their contributions and found myself wanting to even learn more about the adams family.

DID YOU KNOW there are more than 100 colleges and universities in the boston area?

we took the "t" to cambridge for some studious bookstore browsing at the harvard coop. while in the area we also dined at mr. bartley's burger cottage, a harvard staple eatery with a hilarious menu.

DID YOU KNOW boston's nickname is beantown?
back in the day a favorite boston food was beans baked in molasses. in 1921 there was even a molasses flood which killed 21 people, but our evening with baked beans was much calmer. we simply ate the boston baked beans then retired to the beantown pub to watch tuesday night's red sox game and play some pool.

DID YOU KNOW bostonians eat more ice cream per person, year round, than anyone else in america?
our last night in boston we tried one of the many ice cream parlors the city has to offer. we tried jp licks and i can now see why bostonians eat so much ice cream. how could you not with so many good flavors around?

DID YOU KNOW we are so thankful for our trip?
a huge thanks goes to...
mom, dad, grandbud, and grandmama for our great hotel.
bill and hazanne for the awesome red sox tickets.
adelaide for taxi costs and admission fees.
jim and karen for our flights, meals, and babysitting.

DID YOU KNOW we would miss someone lots?

we had so much fun celebrating and making fun memories in boston. we didn't mind coming home though. we didn't want to be away from this 8 month old face any longer!

I am a Red Sox fan so to say I'm jealous of your games and pub crawling would be an understatement! It looks like you two had a blast - what a wonderful way to celebrate an amazing accomplishment!

I did not know most of those things and I have lived an hour away from Boston my whole life! I also did not know that you were a Yankees fan...I am afraid that I can no longer be your blog-friend!

What a great re-cap. I live in Boston and didn't know all of the neat facts you shared. The ice cream one was most surprising, but I eat SO much ice cream living here...it makes sense. Thanks for loving our city!!

Annalee, the trip sounds great! I didn't know about the ice cream either, but I'm proud to say that I knew all the others.

So good to see you last weekend. See you again in October!
