ah, nicknames.
you absolutely cannot create them for yourself.
many times you can't even remember how they began.
but there is something strangely endearing about them.
back in 1980 i was a new baby and my parents started calling me "annaleeper" (my birthday is on leap day). that was quickly shortened to simply "leaper" or sometimes lengthened to "leaper creeper." they would daily sing their own original song to me to the to the tune of boomer sooner. it was titled leaper creeper ("leaper creeper, leaper creeper, she's a creeper, leaper creeper...") even though no one in my family was OU fans, it is quite the catchy tune.
my mom recalls catching herself in the grocery store one day as she simply shortened "leaper creeper" to "creep." she said she panicked as she wondered what the strangers around her were thinking when she said to her precious little daughter, "okay creep, let's go." although she meant it as endearing as anything else she called me, this is a prime example of the way nicknames have a funny way of evolving into the strangest words to call someone.

Wow - that little 1 month old has a lot of nicknames!! My favorite is sass-a-ma-frass. :) Adelaide's pose is hilarious and hard to believe that it was not staged!! As for my nicknames: Trace (by Brian and alot of others), Punkin (by my dad), T-Shep (by old co-workers and then Brian caught on), and then the traditional sweetsie-weetsie ones by the hubby.
I can definately hear you calling her sass-a-ma-frass! Very classic Annalee! That picture is great! My most common one from my family is Tikki (like Nikki) named by my cousin; also Smiff, T-Brow, I think thats about it.
My dog's name is Bailey, and I started calling her Bailey Belle. But she's a weenie dog, so sometimes we call her Weenie, and then somehow that got merged with Bailey Belle, so now the majority of the time she goes by Weenie Belle. I hope it hasn't scarred her for the rest of her canine life.
Oh I can't wait to meet that sassy little girl! Only one more day!
By the way...I believe you left off your most treasured and beloved nickname! MERLIN! How could you forget???
i love all her nicknames!!! isn't it funny how nicknames are so special....mine has been shortened over the years to thomps or thomp!!! It is amazing I have been married for 5 years and still that is my name! :~)
Great picture of Adelaide. I love sass-a-ma-frass, too cute! When I was little my cousins came up with the nickname Mule for me. It is derived from the phonetic way of saying my name "em-uh-lee". Nice huh?
How fun that your birthday is on leap year!
We don't have kids yet but we call our dog at least 1000 nicknames and most of them don't make sense to anyone but us. The poor dog probably doesn't know his own name because he's called anything but that.
I'm sure our children will have a pelothera of nicknames!
That picture of her is so fantastic - and it's great to compare when you were a baby to your own baby. :)
When I was growing up my parents always called me 'sugar booger'. Where they came up with that lovely title is beyond me.
She IS a sass with that pose!
I love that picture! Sweet Adelaide:)
I completely understand how your mom felt about calling you "creep". Austin and I called each other pookie early on, then pooks, then pooper, then poop (not the gross kind:), then poop head (again, weird) and then one day, Austin affectionately called me "crap face"...but it was really sweet. That's when I cut off the "poop" names.
I love all of Adelaide's nicknames! She's ADORABLE!!
I love that sassy mamma picture and all the nicknames. I love that we call Linde, Linde Pooh, can't remember why, but I do always wonder what people think when we just say pooh.
Two words...MISS PRISS!! That pictures is adorable! Amanda & I want you to come to Houston STAT so we can see her sass in action!
What a sassy little girl! I love that picture and the retro picture of you and your parents! Here are my nicknames that I will share: natrat, nat the rat, poo poo, poo (these emerged from the movie kindergarten cop when two mean kids were calling a little boy poo poo face-my dad still calls me this!). I most often call Addie spunky or punky and right now I'm calling Doak bubba. I can't believe I'm doing that one, but I really want Addie to call him bubba or 'brudder' and I want Doak to call Addie sissy or sister!
Awww I miss you guys and I hope to see you soon! I was called L-bo (pronounced like elbow), weswie berstiner for Leslie Christina which somehow evolved into itchy berstiner and then just itchy... imagine what other people thought when in public my cousin and brother would address me as itchy. Also, Dilbert (after the unfunny cartoon) in middle school and then let's just say that Leslie and lesbian are similar in spelling and sound and that eventually evolved into some names.
Love y'all and can't wait to see the McCord family!
-Leslie G
OH we are the house hold of nicknames! Half of them are so silly and embarrassing that we would never use them out of the house! I feel so bad for our baby, there will be SO many nicknames.
Back when I could first feel the baby, I would say "Oh I feel little touches" and so the baby is now affectionately known as The Little Touch. :)
And you most definitely have a sass-a-ma-frass on your hands with that pose! My word! :)
I LOVE nicknames, and I love that y'all already have so many for your sweet girl. It's funny to read everyone's crazy nicknames. Growing up, my sister always had lots of fun nicknames and hated them and I didn't have any (except for Mind)and wanted one really bad, so finally my mom started calling me Mingaturtles!
LOVE the post... I'm all about nicknames! Mine aren't too exciting: Ames, Amykins, Ameilia, Broms (in my Bromley days), and let's not forget: Mrs. Owen-- hear it everyday! Now for my "child" aka my dog Cali... we've given her many! Cali Lou, Cali-fornia, Cals, Calzone, Cali Wally doodle all the day, I could go on and on... :) ha! Love nicknames!
love, love the pose and the names! how fun! I like all the names. isn't so fun to watch their personalities come out!
as for me- cone head - sadly enough was a nickname b.c of how I looked right after birth. Whenever daddy would say it, I turned into a sass-a-frass, my other nick name :) M
I should also tell you that keith calls me, Honey. It is so fun b/c Reese told someone that keith and I had the same name: honey. We are even in each others cell phones as honey :) Just had to tell the good one! M
I'm a little embarrassed about my nicknames. When I was little it was Doodlebug...I have no idea why. When I got to middle school, I was assigned a "spanish name" in 7th grade in Spanish class. Actually, let me back track, my sister was assigned a spanish name first 2 years before me. Hers was Sarita...I so desired to be a Mollita, but to my dismay, I was assigned Amalia. But, my parents thought Mollita was great. Mollita has turned into SEVERAL differnt names over the year. Currently, my mom and dad call me Lida (short for Mollita) and Leelow (also short for Mollita.)
My parents dogs have MANY more nicknames.....
I'm embarrassed that I wrote all of this. :)
She is too cute for words :) Love, Mad Maddie MAx
Too cute! Love the pix and nicknames. We affectionately call Lily Beth "Monster" and I called her "Poop" in public (short for Pooper of course!) without realizing how it might sound. We call Rainer "RainMan" and my BIL calls him "Mr. Jackson" (his middle name is Jackson). For some reason, my dad always called me "Toad" - even he can't remember why!
